Joshua Tree Rock Climbs Robert Miramontes 9780982615447 Books

I've been climbing at Joshua Tree since 1979. It's a long drive from Seattle, so we like to optimize our time down there. The guidebook situation is crazy. I have about 14 inches of jtree guidebooks, beginning with the seventies version in red fake leather.

Vogels guides are ok, but now they have become so big he's broken them down into Jtree west, with the east version in a perpetual waiting game.

That was the situation when I saw someone with this this guidebook around a campfire this winter: "Joshua Tree", by Robert Miramontes. This book is built to last. It has a sewn binding, not perfect bound, so the pages won't fall out as it ages. It's printed in color on high quality magazine quality paper. The route lines, and marks for bolt locations are always visible, no matter the color or darkness of the rock. The entire park is included in the book, not just the west side. To keep it at one inch thick, he must have dropped some cliffs, but so far everywhere I've been is in the book, and I've been all over this park.

He has thrown in a lot of extras beyond the normal stuff we expect in a modern guidebook. For example, scattered throughout the book are full page color photographs of climbers on beautiful climbs. On the facing page it will say: "12 Terrific Trad Moderates" and list Double Cross, Stichter Quits, Mental Physics, The Flake...etc. He has the same thing for hard cracks, easy sport, hard sport, top ten dihedrals...you get the idea.

He uses enhanced sattelite photos for showing the big picture overview of individual cragging areas, like Echo Cove, or Indian Cove. If you've ever gone looking for a cliff and become lost, never fear: he has most of the crags labeled with gps coordinates. I may buy a gps next time I go down to take advantage of this and find some of the remote crags. There is even an iphone app version of the book, that uses the gps...but I have a droid...so I can't comment on that. This book is very, very good.

Joshua Tree Rock Climbs Robert Miramontes 9780982615447 Books Reviews

This is the best guidebook for J-tree climbing I have used. Blows the Falcon guide away, this I must admit.
Color topo photos, GPS coordinates and fine organization of information/areas.

For the next revision I would request more information per area reading the descents, e.g. info on rap bolts, walk-offs, etc. This is not always clear.
Great resource for heading to the park. It was our first time and we learned our way around and hit many of the classics.
came as expected
Fantastic guide for Joshua Tree that covers damn near anywhere you're going to climb in the park. Full color pictures and easy to read maps of the various sections of the park as well as an index in the back of all of the climbs based off of difficulty rating.
Wayyy better than the falcon guide. Deffinatly buy this if you going. This book has a lot more to offer
This book has a ton of routes with great descriptions. The photos usually make it easy to find the climb you are looking for. The maps could be somewhat more clear, and a better area map would have been nice. The color coding was incorrect for several routes. The sun/shade time-bars included for each crag were WAY OFF. Don't go by them, especially if it's not peak season. Just check the aspect and figure out where/when it will be shaded on your own because we found those to be extremely unreliable, numerous times arriving at "morning sun" areas after 1pm and the sun was on them until past 3pm!!

Other than those minor gripes, an amazing guidebook. Plenty of cool photos, good information, and relatively easy route-finding. I was also very thankful for the descent info!
I can't say that the roads are accurate because I haven't made the trip yet. Seems like an easy and obvious thing to check before a trip anyway. Super happy with this guide. It is exactly what it says it is. It is also very easy to use and understand. Like I said, I haven't made the trip out there yet but I definitely have a better sense of what I'm getting into and how I'd like to plan the trip. I wouldn't plan a trip totally based on one guidebook, I will definitely be looking at other sources. For someone in NYC who can't make frequent trips, this is a great place to start.
