Rebirth, is the continuation of the popular post-apocalyptic tale that one Facebook reviewer called “a stark and uncompromising vision of the future of our world.”

Narrated by Joel’s girlfriend Sara, Rebirth is a story of survival, betrayal, and hope. After giving birth to their son, whose evident purpose is to fulfill the destiny that Joel had forsaken, Sara realizes that her home is no longer a haven.

Menaced by a power-obsessed Earl and frightened by the deterioration of a once-tight group of comrades, she flees north- into a nihilistic world inhabited by dangerous nomads, new friends, and old enemies.

Early reviewers have commented that Rebirth, while a sequel, is a powerful story in its own right. Poeltl has confirmed that a third book, as of yet untitled, will complete the Judas Syndrome trilogy.

“The series will chronicle the struggles and sacrifices of two generations of post-Apocalypse survivors,” he said recently. “The sins of the father (Joel) fall upon his son and Sara both. The question is- will the legacy he left them ensure their survival or their doom?”

Rebirth - An Excellent follow-up to Book One

Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Author: Michael Poeltl
Format: Kindle, Paperback

Distraught and destined to raise her child Leif without his father, Sara finds herself in a battle with Earl for leadership over their small house of survivors. As the days and weeks go by, Earl's hunger for power and delusional ideals lead to ever increasing acts of control and violence forcing Sara to take drastic measures. Finding herself on the run, she follows Joel's last words to go North where she comes upon a group of four elderly women whose fallout shelter provides the perfect home for her and her child. Unfortunately, they can not stay and once more they find themselves searching for their destiny.

Michael Poeltl's "Rebirth" - book two in the Judas Syndrome series - is in many ways the mirror of the first book. Told from Sara's perspective, this volume takes on a different tone. Sara will do anything to protect her child giving her the focus, drive and selflessness Joel did not have. This book also delves deeper into the supernatural elements hinted at in the first book. The "blank man" and his relationship with Leif is powerful and creepy and elements of this volume reminded me of Stephen King's "The Stand".

I enjoyed The Judas Syndrome, but I enjoyed Rebirth even more. The end is more satisfying than the first volume and while one does not get all the answers, it is much more of a complete story than book one while at the same time setting up what I hope will be a stellar final volume. Rebirth is $2.99 on Kindle

Rebirth The Judas Syndrome Book 2 eBook Michael Poeltl Reviews

I wasn't entirely sure how to start this review, nor was I sure how to title it. I loved this book. I loved everything about it. The way that the author captures Sara's emotions at being a mother - the ways he described her love for her child - I have chills thinking about it, because it was absolutely spot on with what I would think being a mother feels like (and after reading it on paper, I hope that's very soon for my husband and me!).

The book is narrated from the point of view of Sara, Joel's girlfriend and her journey at giving birth, protecting and raising their son fatherless after Joel passed away. The new world is further explored in this book, and the ending had my jaw on the floor. This book was incredible. I don't really know how else to describe it. I found that I enjoyed this book a bit more than the original, and I think that is a result of Sara's character. I could completely relate to Sara, wheras with Joel, only to a certain extent. She's compassionate, strong and real.

I can't wait for the third book, and recommend this series to everyone I know.
`Rebirth' is the sequel to Michael Poeltl's debut novel `The Judas Syndrome' (2009). I'm not surprised that he wrote a follow-up, because the ending practically begged for continuation. But I was also wary, because sequels can be like designer knockoffs- compelling in their own way, but rarely as good as the original.

`Rebirth' continues the dark saga of a teenaged band of post-apocalypse survivors. Narrated by Sara, Joel's girlfriend, it fluidly resumes where `The Judas Syndrome' left off. Crises that erupted at the conclusion of the previous book have such disastrous consequences that Sara's new fight for life exceeds all past conflicts. This time the stakes are higher she has given birth to Joel's son, and paranormal influences indicate that the boy has a vital destiny to fulfill. But treacherous former friends, roaming killers, and other grim remnants of a dead world assail them both, making it possible that they won't even see tomorrow, let alone the infant's adulthood.

I agree with another reviewer that `Rebirth' is gentler in tone than `The Judas Syndrome', but the core themes of courage, desperation, and hope remain strong. Putting Sara in the figurative pilot's seat has not resulted in a piece of post-bomb chick lit; because she has so much to live for, she's just as ruthless as her male associates when she has to be, and her actions keep the storyline gritty and fast.

Fans of the first book will find much to enjoy in this second, exciting offering from Michael Poeltl. The dreaded `curse of the crappy sequel' definitely doesn't apply here.
